Folklore of the Holy Land- Reading Diary A

Folklore of the Holy Land Table of Contents

I enjoyed this story overall. One of my favorite chapters was the story of Moslem Cosmogony. I have read and heard of the story of The Beginning, how God created the universe and Earth. So coming into this, I knew the base of the story. I was expecting the story to be very similar or even identical to the story that I have been read to since I was a child but it was not. There was actually a lot of new additions and changes. For instance, the order the creations were created and the Tablet of Destiny. The Tablet of Destiny was tablet that included everything that happened in the past, present, and what will happened in the future. It also included how each person will live his life -- happily, richly, poorly, faithful, or religious.
Despite the changes, my favorite new thing about this story was the reasoning behind how the Earth is held or steadied. The story asserts that the Earth is prevented from rocking by an angel that holds and supports the Earth. This reminded me of the Greek mythological story about Atlas and how he holds and supports the world on himself.
I also really enjoyed the story of Our Father Adam. I liked how the story explained why there are different races of men and women. It stated that Man was made from a collection of different soils; this is the reasoning behind the various kinds of colors of men and women.
