Introduction, Week 1

Hi!

My name is Sarah Nguyen and I am currently a junior. My major is Psychology pre-pt. I hope to one day become a physical therapist. In my spare time I enjoy hanging out with friends, reading, running, and watching movies. Some of my favorite books are the Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, and the Road by Cormac McCarthy.

I also really enjoy traveling. Last summer, I was fortunate enough to study abroad. I studied abroad in Ireland for a month and during that time I was able to visit London and Brussels, Belgium. I enjoyed my time at each of these places. I loved Ireland because of the greenness of the natural environment, the hospitality, and the cheerfulness of the Irish population. London was great because while I was there it happened to be the Queen's official birthday so I thus got to see the Queen, Prince William and Harry, an Kate Middleton in front of Buckingham Palace. And I really enjoyed Belgium because of its delicious food. While I was there I got to try Belgium waffles, Belgium chocolate, and macarons. It was delicious!

I’m a huge fan of the TV shows House of Cards and True Detective. At first I was reluctant to watch House of Cards because I thought that you had to be very politically informed to be able to comprehend the show but you really don’t. Although politics is a large component of the show, the show is more focused on the character’s development and relationship with other characters. I really enjoy True Detective because of the style it is portrayed in; the atmosphere of the show is dark and gloomy throughout the show. It is really interesting how the environment of the show parallels the main character’s personality.

  1. Hi Sarah. That's great that you want to become a physical therapist and help people. Like you, I was also reluctant to start watching House of Cards, but now it is one of my favorite shows! I've heard great things about True Detective also, but I've never seen it. It's really cool that you got to study abroad last semester also and I'm sure all of the places you visited were a lot of fun.

  2. Hi Sarah!

I noticed that you mentioned The Road by Cormac McCarthy. This is one of my favorite books, too! The story is so riveting and intense.

I'm very jealous that you had the opportunity to study abroad. I have never traveled out of the country, but I definitely hope to some day.

You have rad taste in TV. House of Cards and True Detective are two of my top shows! Great acting. Intriguing plot. Man, just amazing stuff.

  3. Oh, I am glad you included that fabulous picture here in your Introduction post, Sarah! As you'll see, this post will get a lot of visitors over the semester, so lots of people will get to see that picture. Super! And I am also a HUGE fan of House of Cards... for sure my husband and I will be bingewatching the next season when it comes out. And have you watched the old British series on which the American series is based? It is fantastic, too — but really different from the American series in many ways, and it's fascinating to think about just how they went about adapting the British story to the American political context. I think you can even watch it at Netflix; it's also called House of Cards. Like with the American series, you have to have a sense of British politics to appreciate what is going on... the whole presence of Margaret Thatcher haunts that show, and there's really nothing equivalent to that in the American version at all! Great stuff! :-)

  4. Hey, Sarah!! I think that it is fantastic that you were able to study abroad over the summer! I am currently studying abroad in Italy, and I am loving it! I have plans to visit London and Dublin over spring break, so any tips or suggestions you can give me over what to see/do would be awesome! I wish I could spend more time in Ireland, as I have been told (like you said) that it is a really beautiful and friendly environment.

Also, Catcher in the Rye is a fantastic book, so I can see that you have good taste, haha. Can't wait to read more of your posts!

  5. Hey Sarah! That is incredible that you got to do a semester abroad. I have never been able to travel much but I have always wanted to go. That picture is amazing. That view must have been awesome to see. I hope to one day be able to travel the world but, until then, it is nice to be able to see pictures of what other places look like.

  7. Hi Sarah! I also studied abroad last summer! I was in Italy and traveled all around the country. I would love to go to Ireland though. Such gorgeous scenery and interesting culture. Ugh, can't believe you got to see the royal family! I am so jealous!

I just got accepted to medical school so I know how challenging it is to be a pre-health major and apply to grad schools and everything. Good luck and I hope that everything works out the way you want!

  8. Goodness, your list of favorite books is fantastic! I, too, especially enjoyed Catcher in the Rye and East of Eden; those are timeless. Regarding East of Eden, I often find myself thinking about how children conceptualize their parents as perfect humans, and then are somewhat disturbed when they finally realize that this is not the case - that's stuck with me from Steinbeck's novel, definitely.

Wow! That's awesome that you visited the Cliffs of Moher. One of my friends almost fell off of them while hiking.

I'm so excited you got to study abroad in Ireland! My friend is actually study abroad there this semester, and I know she's loving it. It sounds beautiful!

  11. Hey Sarah! It's also love Catcher in the Rye. It was one of my favorite books I read in high school, mainly because it was also the shortest. My roommate from last year is pre-pt and now she lives in Tulsa. She really likes it and when she comes to visit and practices her stretching on me and my friend. I also a big House of Cards fan. Have you watched the new season?

  13. Oh, I would LOVE to visit Ireland! A lot of my family traces back there. I would also love to be able to go to London and pretty much anywhere in Europe. What perfect timing that was to be able to see the birthday celebration for the Queen! I have heard from various other people about both of those shows and they all say the same thing. I will have to check them out soon!

  14. Hey Sarah, nice to meet you! I was lucky enough to spend last summer in Europe too, although I was in Spain for most of the time. I have a friend that visited Ireland for a weekend and loved it. That's so cool that you were there for the birthday celebration. I'm also a big House of Cards fan, I actually just finished binge watching it last night. I haven't watching True Detective before but it sounds like I should, everyone I've talked to has good things to say about it.

  15. Hey Sarah, nice to meet you! I studied abroad last summer as well, but I was in London and France. I loved London! I hope to visit Ireland one day too. It is my goal to travel as much as I can, but we'll see what money allows. House of Cards is a great show too. I still haven't finished the third season, but I'm looking forward to seeing what happens!

  16. Hey,

Thanks for sharing your background and interests with the class. I know that is not always the easiest thing to do. I have learned in my Computer Mediated Communication course that online courses make it easier to be yourself. You may never see anyone of your classmates in person; therefore, you find it somewhat comforting to express yourself. I have always wanted to study abroad. Unfortunately, I seem to have other commitments at the time that prevent me from doing so. Congrats!

  17. Hi, Sarah! We have a few things in common! I am a junior Psych major, too (although not pre-PT). That's awesome that you want to be a physical therapist. I was lucky enough to go to England, Ireland, and Scotland in high school and absolutely loved it. How cool that you got to see the royal family! I also love running. And lastly, I am on Season 3 of House of Cards and I am so hooked! It's such a great show! Nice to meet you!

  18. Hey Sarah! It's nice to meet you! I too, like you, had the opportunity to study abroad this past summer, but I went to Arezzo, Italy. I bet your experience in Ireland (and really in Europe) was incredible! I know mine was! I've yet to start House of Cards, but everyone tells me I need to check it out. I hope your semester has been wonderful, and best of luck to you as you finish out this spring!

  19. Hi, Sarah! I'm also a huge fan of House of Cards! If you haven't watched the third season yet, I'm not going to spoil anything, but it was awesome! I also studied abroad in Europe last summer! Otherwise, I've always found psychology really interesting, and I regret that I haven't pursued it more. Good luck with the rest of the semester!

  20. Hi Sarah, my name is also Sarah! It’s a great name, that’s for sure. The Count of Monte Cristo is also one of my favorite books. I love the intricate twists and how everything is intertwined. It one of those books that sometimes you have to go back five chapters while reading to find the connection or remind yourself of an important detail. Great book! Good look at PT school!

  21. Sarah! So. Many. Comments. First, I like your taste in books! I also like Count of Monte Cristo and a lot of Steinbeck's work. As far as traveling, I am right there with you! I love traveling too and am happy to say that I will be able to go to Europe this summer for a few weeks. Hearing your positive experiences just gets me all the more excited. Your major sounds like a lot of fun as well, and best of luck to you in PT school- we have an excellent program for that so you're in good hands there! You're a cool gal and best of luck to you and your future adventures!

  22. Hey Sarah it is nice to meet you. The Road by Comac is amazing. I love this book, it is so intense and full of hopelessness and at the same time full of hope and love. The ending had my in tears, especially when the boy asks "Are you one of the Good People?" I love Cormac I think his books should be required reading in college. Well Nice to meet you.
